Don't Be A Social Media Fail!

By Meg Hodson

I love social media.  It's a community I love being a part of.  I have learned a lot in the 4 years I have been active on social media.  I am still learning, too,  I've gathered a few of my favorite tips that I believe are key to having a good social media presence, hopefully guaranteeing you won't be a social media fail!

1.  Don't Buy Followers.  Followers and likes are the easiest thing for people to relate to when they view a profile or page.  Easy enough, right?  If you have more followers, then you are reaching more people?  It would make sense, then, to consider buying followers.  Well, unfortunately, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. Most of those supposed followers or likes you purchase aren't even real people or accounts.   Is that  high number of likes or followers really going to make a difference in the long run?

Let's say you have 100,000 followers on Twitter.  Only 500 of those followers are active and engaged with your message.  What I mean by this is that they are REAL followers, real people reading what you have to say.  The percentage you have of engaged followers is .5%.  So, not many of your "followers" are hearing what you have to say.  If no one is listening, your message is essentially falling on dead ears.

But let's say you have 5,000 Twitter followers and 4,000 of them are engaged, real people who are actively following you.  Your percentage of engaged listeners is a whopping 80%.

Ultimately, you are putting your message out there on social media because you want people to listen, you want to gain new customers, or maybe you want to meet people yourself.  Fake likes and followers get you nowhere.  It is not organic and will ultimately lead to failure and a lackluster presence on social media.

2.  Be Truthful.  We have all been there.  We are standing in line at the checkout lane at the grocery store and all we see are the headlines on magazines of celebrity gossip.  Most of it is sensationalized and not true. But we are still drawn to it.  Do you buy the issue?  I would guess most of you would not.....and if you do, deep down you know it is not altogether truthful information.

Remember this when you are sharing on social media.  Tell the truth.  Do not over sensationalize topics. Speak from the heart. Use humor.  You can certainly make your "headlines" swoonworthy, as long as you speak of something that actually happened.

3.  Engage Personally.  A colleague of mine gave me some sage advice that I will never forget: "Schedule content, create conversation."  In this busy world of social media, it is imperative and useful to be able to schedule posts and tweets.  That is a given.  But don't expect magic to happen if that is all you are doing.  Be ready to check your stream, engage with those that are sharing your content, get to know your fans.  It adds authenticity to your presence.

4.  Look At Your Stats.  For free, you have access to a wealth of information regarding your activity on social media.  Twitter can send you weekly updates via email, including your most popular tweets and links that are most clicked on.  Facebook has similar analytic data available.  Google Analytics is also helpful with website stats, as well as specific URL statisitcs (yes, you can enter social media URL's on Google Analytics!)  In addition, there are some beneficial and useful sites that for free (or a very minimal cost), give you amazing insight into your presence and behavior on social media.  One of my favorites is SumAll.  Check in often to see what is working the best on your social media channels.

5.  Use It or Lose It.  As much as we might want to only occasionally put our social media accounts to work, it doesn't work so well.  Social media posts have a very short shelf life.  What was news this morning may very well be irrelevant within hours, even minutes  You must keep your content fresh and constant.  That is no easy task.  While scheduling programs do help this process, it is still a commitment.  If your goal is to gain a solid presence on social media, it is a commitment you must make.  While you may have your days or little or no interaction, keep active on your accounts on some level as much as you can.

Good luck!

Oscar Twitter & Instagram Party!

Hey Oscar fans!  Hopefully you are anticipating the show on Sunday with excitement.  Hopefully you've linked up on our Oscar Blog Hop that began earlier today.  If you didn't read our fun column on Celebrity Oscar Moms, you can read it here.

But the real fun will happen Sunday during the Red Carpet "pre-show" and Oscar broadcast.  We hope you will join us (and many of your fellow blogging buddies) for a Twitter and Instagram party.  It's easy to take part in the fun.  I've outlined the guidelines below:

1.  Use The Hashtag #oscarhop.  The red carpet coverage on E! begins at 2:30 PST (5:30 EST). When you enter your tweet or Instagram photo, be sure to add the hashtag #oscarhop after your description.  That way, your tweet or photo will be included in the stream.  Feel free to also use the hashtag #oscars, which a lot of tweeters will be using, too.  That will increase our exposure.  Feel free to tag relevant tweeters who might be interested in this topic.

If you are new to Twitter parties or Instagram hashtag projects, it's easy to follow.  In Twitter, go to the "Discover" subcategory and enter the hashtag #oscarhop.  Then, you will see the stream of tweets that have been entered with that hashtag.  The more tweeting and retweeting, the better.  If you are using Instagram, go the "Explore" section (it's the icon across the bottom that looks like a compass).  Once there, enter the hashtag #oscarhop in the search box at the top of the screen.  There, you will see all photos that have that hashtag attached to them.

2.  Promote Like Crazy.  As you see tweets and Instagram photos come through, like them, favorite them, retweet them!  That will increase the media presence of the party.  Please share this blog post with the share buttons below.  I will be sharing the above photo via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram quite frequently.  Feel free to copy and share from there....or you can copy the image above directly and share.  Let's create a buzz!!

3.  Have Fun.  Whether there is 10 of us partying or 200 hundred of us (I can only wish!), let's have fun and make new friends.

See you Sunday!

If you like what you're reading, I invite you to follow my blog.  Cheers!

Oscar Weekend 2013

Hey readers!  I teased you earlier today on Twitter and Instagram about all the fun things that were happening this weekend on the blog.  It's a little late here on the West Coast, so some of you won't read this until the morning.  But don't worry, you won't be missing out on a thing!

I have a series of fun articles and activities planned for this weekend.  I love the Oscars and I love blogging.  So, I decided to bring the two together.  Below is a list of what will be going on.

1.  Blog Post:  Celebrity Moms at the Oscars.  I'm a big celebrity nut, and I especially love following my favorite celebrity Mom's.  I compiled a list of some of my favorites and their appearances at the Oscars.  You'll see that post Friday morning.

2.  Cutie Cocktails.  No Oscar party is complete without some delicious cocktails.  My ongoing "Mama Needs A Martini" series continues with a twist Friday night.  I am featuring a martini and a champagne cocktail made with the ever-popular "Cutie" mandarin oranges.  I don't know about you, but my kids love them, and we have a ton around right now.  So, mama is going to enjoy them, too. ;)

3.  Oscar Hop 2013.  I'm not even sure if it's been done before, but I thought why not, let's have a blog hop in honor of the awards!  Everyone is invited.  You don't have to blog (simply link up your Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest profile).  You don't have to have an Oscar-specific post on your blog (just link up your main page).  The idea is for everyone to get to know fellow fans of Oscar!  The hop will go live at midnight Friday night (so technically the 23rd at 12:01 am).  I will give lots of tweets and updates regarding it's launch, so if you forget, no worries.  Just be sure you are following so you don't miss out.  The hop will only last until Monday night, so it's important to link in early.

4.  Twitter and Instagram Party.  During both the red carpet coverage before the show, as well as during the show, I will be holding a party on both Twitter and Instagram.  The hashtag will be #oscarhop.  So, take a pic of your t.v. screen and post it on Instagram.  Voice off with a tweet about something worn by your favorite actress.  Anything goes really.  I'll post a separate post reminder on Sunday, as well as social media reminders leading up to the red carpet.  If you're new to Twitter and Instagram parties, don't worry!  It's very easy and I will be sure to leave detailed instructions in a separate post on Sunday.

If you like what you're reading, I invite you to follow my blog.

A Few Fun Instagram Projects

I love Instagram hashtag projects. Various bloggers or Instagram devotees will choose a theme and assign a hashtag to it and collect ideas from followers on said topic. I came across a few this morning that I wanted to share; they were both shared by Momfluential.com.

The first is the "How I Stroll Photo Tour", created by Baby Jogger. It only lasts until January 3rd, so hurry! It focuses on how you as a Mom are a great multi-tasker. So capture those moments when you are juggling and post it on Instagram. Be sure to use the hashtag #howistroll and follow @babyjogger.

The second one is the "January Moments That Matter!", sponsored by Tip Junkie. It lasts the entire month of January and each day has a different topic for you to capture a picture of on Instagram. For example, for tomorrow, the topic is "resolution/goal". Easy enough for me!

The great plus of both of these projects is that you might be featured on the blog, Twitter page, or website of the sponsors! So, not only is it fun to participate, but you might pick up some lovely promotion!

If you aren't following us yet on Instagram, please take a look at @happykidsinc. And we love to follow back!

Have a great New Year's Eve tonight and 2013!
