It's been awhile since I have been to a live concert. If memory serves correctly, it was almost 2 years ago, seeing one of my favorite artists, Daughtry. So, when I had the chance to attend the 2nd night of the Rose Festival "KINK On the Waterfront" concert this past weekend, I welcomed the opportunity to go. With the added bonus of a backstage pass, how could I say no?
The three artists that were part of night 2 were Valerie June, Scars On 45, and the headlining act, Capital Cities. Although attendance seemed down due to the off and on rain showers, the crowd was enthusiastic. Valerie June hit a a subtle, quiet vibe as the opener. Scars on 45 mixed some onstage humor with catchy, upbeat tunes.

The crowd thickened and the rain let up for the very entertaining and exciting Capital Cities. Their music was jazzy, funky, and the groove was addictive. The music was crisp and clear. The band was very likable without trying too hard. In a word, perfection.

I was lucky enough to capture some candid shots backstage as the band got ready to perform. I love the shot I took of trumpeter Spencer Ludwig warming up (above). Word has it the band wears their snazzy monogrammed jackets (below) at every performance.

For me, one of the most vital parts of a good concert is energy. By that, I mean not only energy from the performers, but also energy from the crowd and a mutual exchange of that energy between stage and viewers. The final piece of the performance that sealed this was a frenetic yet completing engaging bounce of beach balls and crowd participation. It was a perfect end to a perfect night.
