If you are a parent, you are undoubtedly concerned and proactive about your child's safety. It's probably something you think about and act upon everyday. You may wonder if all your coaching and correcting is truly teaching your children about how to stay safe in our world?
My daughter is in 4th grade and my son is a 2nd grader. We live about 6 blocks from their grade school and we walk most days to and from school. After much coaching and thoughtful thinking, my husband and I decided to let them walk home from school together one day a week. The first couple times I was a little on edge. But it honestly might have been more a tinge of melancholy that they are growing up quickly. Then, I also reminded myself of how I would ride my bike alone to and from grade school. It was about a 2-2.5 mile trek! I survived. I'm trying to keep that statistic in mind as I find the balance between independence and safety.

I really like the setting of this video. It's pleasant, pleasing, the host is friendly and interactive with the children, and they are surrounded by things they love. I especially like the emphasis about the difference from "it's ok" to "listening to your uh-oh"; I feel kids can really grasp this concept. I also like the points about children being the bosses of their own bodies and that families should always have a plan.
