A very fond memory of my childhood was being a Girl Scout. My second grade school photo was taken in my Brownies uniform! I was a Girl Scout throughout grade school and remember my experiences in a nostalgic way.
The memory that stands out most in my mind from being a Girl Scout are the day camps I participated in. I remember it was a BIG deal. I am out on my own for a full day with my girlfriends, learning a lot. For some reason, I distinctly remember packing my sack lunch carefully. Since it was a "special occasion", I got to go to the grocery store with my Mom and pick some items that normally wouldn't be part of my school lunches. It was also the first time I learned about poison oak and poison ivy. I am happy to report to this day, I have never had either. Thank you Girl Scouts!
Selling Girl Scout cookies has taken on iconic status. Everyone gets excited when "cookie time" comes around. Everyone knows all the flavors and has their favorites. I am always happy to support an organization that empowers girls. Although my daughter is not a Girl Scout, I have plenty of friends with daughters who are active Girl Scouts. We never have a problem finding cookies (and this is a good thing!).
I truly believe an activity like selling Girl Scout cookies has many positive accolades for young girls. They learn the importance of helping support a cause they are a part of and believe in. They build confidence by asking people they don't know if they would like to buy cookies. Girls are working toward a bigger goal of supporting the group as a whole....and that's a good thing.
