Natural Approaches to Ear Infections

I've always thought it best to let your body naturally "cure" itself and fight infection if it can.  It's so common these days to quickly treat a medical problem with antibiotics.  When two of my children were complaining about sore and achey ears, my husband quickly thought we should take them to the doctor.  I was quick to say, "no, let's see how they handle it and how the symptoms develop."

It got me to delve a little further into the use of antibiotics and if there were homeopathic approaches to treating eat infections.

Let me premise this by saying that I do not have a medical degree or medical training.  I did not talk to a doctor or medical professional in regards to this topic.  I am expressing an opinion on this topic.

In a health article by the New York Times, they cite many alteratives to "curing" the infection.  They include: tea tree oil, warm salt bags near the ear(s), and a warm water bottle near the ear.  A well-known remedy is a gentle massage below and behind each ear lobe, to help drain the ear of excess fluid.  Since homeopathic remedies are not regulated by the FDA, you will want to consult your doctor or naturopath before administering to your child.

Sometimes the worst part about an ear infection is the ear ache and ear pain.  Often, a heating pad or a children's pain reliever, such as Tylenol, can be helpful.  Of course, you will want to consult your doctor before administering any medicine to your child.
A fellow blogger friend of mine tried an experiment using melted coconut oil.  Be sure the oil is completely cooled and drop a few drop in each ear.  This can be accomplished by tilting the head to the side, adding a few drop with a dropper, waiting a minute or two, and switch to the other side.  She tried this on her infant and it worked famously.

Another great blog I follow has an extensive list of simple ideas to cure infections.  Some of these remedies include: garlic oil , onion juice, lemon balm, and hydrogen peroxide.  All of these are dropped gently in the ear or applied to the outer love.

When using oils to relieve ear infections, a small dropper should be used and the oil should be luke warm, but not too hot.

  2. My youngest has had a couple of ear infections and I have waited them out instead of putting him on antibiotics. My pediatrician was the one that recommended only giving antibiotics if necessary, she believes too many kids take them when they aren't needed and I agree :) Thanks for the follow, following you back.

  5. Great tips and suggestions! It is always good to treat the ear infections at right time as these infections can cause hearing loss or other ear problems when not treated at right time. Home remedies and natural approaches are always good in order to cure the ear infections. Lavender Oil, Olive oil, and garlic can be helpful to cure ear infections. Apart from these home remedies, one should take Hidden Hearing test once in a month to examine the auditory condition. Hearing test can give the accurate condition of your hearing ability.
